The Women's Research and Education Institute (WREI) Congressional Fellowships on Women and Public Policy are designed to train potential leaders in public policy formation to examine issues from the perspective, experiences, and needs of women. Administered by WREI, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization located in Washington, DC, this program is unique -- the only Congressional fellowships directly by, for and about women. Between six and ten fellowships may be available for the 2008 program, which runs January-August.

A WREI Fellow works a minimum of 35 hours a week in a Congressional office as a legislative aide on policy issues affecting women. Fellows meet weekly for issue seminars directed by the WREI staff.

The Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of $1,300 for eight months (January through August) plus $500 for health insurance. Fellows will be reimbursed up to $750 for tuition each semester for the cost of three hours tuition at a Fellow's home institution.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a master's or doctoral program at an accredited U.S. institution or have completed such a program within the past eighteen months. WREI strongly recommends that applicants complete at least nine hours of graduate coursework before applying and display serious interest in research and policymaking relevant to women's social and political status. Fellows are selected on the basis of academic competence as well as demonstrated interest in the public policy process.
